Blind people ‘read’ letters traced on their brains with electricity

The technique transmits short bursts of electricity in a sequence that mimics the shape of letters such as ‘N’ or ‘Z.’ In trials, two individuals who had lost their sight correctly identified more than 80% of the letters ‘shown’ to them.

Utah Array Implantation Allows Blind Woman to See Again

Researchers in Spain have successfully bypassed the eyes with the Utah Array to allow rudimentary vision. Sight is restored by feeding signals directly to the brain using a modified pair of glasses that are blacked out and fitted with a tiny camera. The underlying principles have been used in human-electronic implants in mainstream medicine for decades. The glasses are hooked up to a computer that processes a live video feed, turning it into electronic signals.

 New Brain Implant Tech from Blackrock is Making ‘Mind Over Matter’ a Reality

In 2012 quadriplegic Jan Scheuermann had two electrode arrays implanted in her brain’s left motor cortex. Within a week, she could use the implant to move a prosthetic arm in all three dimensions, and move its wrist in an additional four.
